Can Walking at Work Increase Productivity?

While humans have been walking and completing complex tasks for thousands of years some employers were reluctant to believe this was possible in an office; a new study proves otherwise.

However, many dismissed the productivity potential based on multi-tasking studies showing that multiple tasks performed simultaneously often led to productivity declines. Walking has been shown again to be an exception to the rule and offers the ability to improve health, increase cognitive ability and a worker’s productivity.

The study out of the University of Minnesota adds to a growing body of evidence that walking while working improves not only an employee’s health but their productivity levels as well. Avner Ben-Ner, a professor of Work and Organizations at the Carlson School of Management, along with his colleagues, studied 40 employees at a Twin Cities financial services company to analyze the impact of walking with treadmill desks on their work output. An overall performance 10 point scale was used and participants scored a significant increase in the scale over the twelve month period according to Ben-Ner.

“This is not the first study to show that walking while working increases productivity but it is significant because it adds to the body of scientific evidence proving that there is a difference between multi-tasking and walking while working,” stated Steve Bordley, CEO of TrekDesk Treadmill Desk. “While our brains may not excel at multi-tasking it is important to remember that we have evolved to walk and engage in primary tasks since the beginning of time.
