Vets Demand "Ears" Pulled
Toomey's Reckless Gutting of the Renewable Fuel Standard Hamstrings American Security, VoteVets.org Says.
The largest group of progressive veterans in America, VoteVets.org, is today calling on Senator Patrick Toomey to withdraw an amendment that would gut the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) by removing the Corn Ethanol Mandate from it. The amendment is being offered to a bill that would authorize construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline. Corn ethanol represents the largest chunk of biofuels in the United States. The group said that the use of biofuels is an important piece of the puzzle, when trying to improve our energy security.
“There is one hard, simple truth: Every drop of ethanol we produce is a drop of oil we aren’t buying,” said Jon Soltz, Iraq War Veteran and Chairman of VoteVets.org. “And every drop of oil we don’t buy lowers worldwide demand, drops oil prices, and means oil-rich nations who are hostile to us make less profit.”
Toomey's Tacit Agenda
“Gutting the heart of the RFS means literally helping to make money for the enemies of America and her allies,” Soltz added. “Big oil, of course, doesn’t care much about things like that. But Pat Toomey should. He has a decision to make. Help his oil buddies, or help America.”
A Greater Fringe Benefit
According to the Center for Responsive Politics, since 2009, Senator Toomey has received over $442,000 from Oil and Gas interests, who stand to gain, financially, if the RFS is gutted because of his amendment.
